SW CO

As I get out of the van at Orvis, I see.....
found out later this is Garth and he has a brother named Wayne

he was one cool cat

it was my first visit to Orvis - this is the island pool

I spent the majority of my time in this main pool

rolled into Ouray too early to hit the main hot spring pool

maybe some other time

their laughable skatepark is right by the waterpark
Also my 1st visit to the Wiesbaden vapor caves

hot spring water in a pool - kinda boring...but cool in the rain
the entrance to the cave is below the hotel

stock photo of the main cave - it was hot and worth it

Ouray is known as the Switzerland of Colorado
heading south out of Ouray over Red Mountain Pass is harrowing
avalanche protection
a slow but picturesque drive in the mountains
hung out most of the afternoon at the Durango Co-op
Ever since leaving Valley View, my back had been killing me. I splurged and got a soothing massage at Orvis and by the time I arrived in Durango I was on the search for another. Chris at Body Recovery worked wonders on me and taught me loads about driving posture and how to prevent back pain.
nap time
in my humble opinion - the best name for a pizza joint

Shiprock New Mexico
I tried on Hyland's shades

is this Window Rock?

who knows, mesas like this abound in the SW
made dinner at this Navajo historical marker
then pushed on into NE Arizone where I slept for the night

Payson swimming hole coming up next........

I left Valley View a bit early upon getting a tip about a
"good" skatepark in the town of Saguache only 14 miles away.

never ceases to amaze me what non skaters think is a GOOD skatepark

lonesome skates
I bedded down on a lonely dirt road between Saguache & Gunnison
up early and the sun was shining
windy road through canyons before Gunnison

a quick skate at the new Gunnison Skatepark
the drive from Gunnison to Crested Butte

I planned to meet an old high school pal, Megan, at the skatepark

the plaque on the bowl

Megan and her youngest daredevil Alexey
Megan and I had some classes together junior & senior years at KMC. I specifically remember squeezing her thick pigtails when I would sit behind her in math class. I lost track of her right after graduation and a few years ago inquired about her to my KMC connection, Julie F. Julie wasn't sure about her whereabouts. Then a few months ago, Julie sends me this link!

wasn't long before Alexey was yearning for the big terrain
walked to her truck to visit a jobsite and peeked in on some past work
up into the hills to check on a job
quick stop at Lake Irwin

how is that for picturesque?

the movie house from Mountain Swiss Family Robinson

last years work

Alexey & I went on a mission to the treehouse while mom was working
wild flower shot for Dr Vine
I couldn't believe my good fortune when Megan fired up the bobcat!
she's right at home behind the controls
trapped

getting a little help from a friend

the smile of freedom

coming down off the mountain back into town

the little guy was out cold
Megan dropped me off at the skatepark & after hugs, I vowed to return in 2015 for a longer visit.

did you miss this LINK?

my annual visit

this was my 1st visit to Valley View with a sunburn

got there at 9am and went straight to the waterfall pool for a soak in the shade

that's more like it !
we did get scattered showers but it was mellow and fun to soak in the rain
tried on this tye dyed bucket cap

Ken got hit by a bus in Istanbul while driving his motorcycle - recovery continues

wasn't planning on leaving day 2 until 10pm, so I had to get my daily skate in
I think this was my first time skating naked.

when I bailed out into the pool, I didn't properly kick away my ax
my favorite Pearl Jam song that coincidentally I listened to on the drive down
loads of good messages in chalk around the gazebo

summer intern Kevin makes assemblage art - this is his take on Valley View

I can dig it !

this goes out to all the strong women in my life!

the top pool also the source of all the hot water on the property
two views from the top pool

plenty of close encounters with tame deer
after sufficient soaking, cooking, and postcard writing, I ducked out a bit early to see how close to Crested Butte I could get.
